Store calls for graffiti artists

Al Maha.com published a call for graffiti artists in Kuwait to go visit Pink Moon and do their thing on the store's side walls. I think its a welcome opportunity for these "underground" artists and I wonder how they will respond to this.

The call comes with a small warning though, saying the store is not responsible for the wall so if  the government decides to repaint it, they can do it.

Reblogged from Pinoy Online Chronicles:

Everlito Villacruz, a Filipino OFW based in Kuwait, won the top prize in the Red Bull Art of Can competition and exhibit which opened on December 3 and will run until December 17 at the 360 MALL Exhibition Hall, Kuwait.

Villacruz’s winning work, entitled “Scorpion,” bested 120 other art pieces submitted to the competition, which includef a variety of creations from sculptures to paintings as well as photography and unique handmade mock ups. Of the total entries, 63 made it to the exhibit.
All in all, the competitors used around 20,000 cans of Red Bull energy drink and Red Bull sugar free drink to create their innovative work.

Six judges from Kuwait selected the winners based on three criteria: creative concept, execution, and construction.

The art of creating masterpieces out of Red Bull cans started in 1999. Exhibitions have been held all around the globe from Europe to New Zealand. In countries like Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Singapore and the USA, artists have been inspired to create artworks made from aluminum.

Villacruz, an OFW for the last five years, works as Project Design Coordinator at Warba Group in Kuwait. He also writes for the Philippine Online Chronicles’ Buhay Pinoy Channel.

Lady Gaga/Madonna Mash Up

So much has been said and written lately about Lady Gaga's current hit "Born this Way" being a rip-off of Madonna's hits particularly "Express Yourself" and "Vogue". While browsing in YouTube for any video comparison between these two, I stumbled on this very, very brilliant cover by a male artist named Omar Afuni- a half-Jordanian, half-Lebanese singer who is incidentally born, raised and is still based here in Kuwait.

Yes, he is a guy singing  two "girl" songs but hey, you can't deny the fact, HE IS GOOD! I ended up subscribing to his site where he has a lot of cool covers of other hits like this newest mash up of Jessie J's Price Tag and Black Eyed Peas' Where is the Love?.

If you like his songs, you can visit his official website, become a fan at Facebook or follow him on Twitter and show your support on his dreams.

Disappearing Act

The Man who isn't there
shared from Yahoo.

You might say that Liu Bolin likes to blend in.

But the Chinese artist does more than just wear camouflage pants and stand next to a bush. With the help of some assistants, Bolin paints himself, head to toe and unassumingly just stands there--in grocery stores, next to piles of coal, on staircases, you name it. And, unless you look really closely, you'll miss him entirely--which is pretty much the point.

It turns out that the process of making oneself truly invisible is quite painstaking. According to a report in the U.K.'s Daily Mail, Bolin spends hours perfecting his poses to ensure that he'll mesh with his background. Bolin then stands "in front of backdrops with a team of two assistants to paint the camouflage on his clothes." The "camouflage" can be anything, so long as Bolin segues seamlessly into the backdrop.

Aside from looking cool, Bolin's work does have a deeper meaning. Again according to the Daily Mail, the living sculptures are "designed to show how we all can just disappear in today's mass production world." And how! The photo of Bolin standing in front of a grocery store shelf full of soda cans and bottles is full of color, shading and shadow.

Bolin, who has been at this for several years, has built up an impressive portfolio. A gallery of his work can been seen at Eli Klein Fine Art
