North Korea restores order to Kim funeral with Photoshop

The funeral procession for Kim Jong-Il was carried out with military precision and when a handful of dawdlers messed up those regimented lines, they were eliminated. From the photo, that is.

A photo released by the North Korea's state news agency and transmitted by the Germany-based European Pressphoto Agency is slightly different from a photo taken at nearly the identical moment and released by Japanese agency Kyodo News.

The Japanese picture captured a half-dozen men near a camera on a tripod lingering behind the line of mourners on the left side of the boulevard as the motorcade passed by.

In the photo by the North Korean Central News Agency, those men, their camera and their footprints have been digitally removed, restoring absolute order to the crowds lining the boulevard as the cortege passed by.
The alterations were discovered by the New York Times with the help of digital forensics expert Hany Farid of Dartmouth College.

The European Pressphoto Agency, which distributed the doctored North Korea photo, issued a "mandatory kill" for its clients, meaning they were not to use the picture.

The agency granted an exception to ABC News "for the sole purpose of being able to show and explain what had been altered before the picture was provided to international news agencies by KCNA [North Korean Central News Agency]. We consider this as part of a transparent and responsible clarification process."

A European Pressphoto Agency spokeswoman told ABC News, "Any kind of digital manipulation violates EPA's code of ethics."

"Sendong" World's Deadliest Storm in 2011

Source: ABS-CBN News

Deaths reach 927, hundreds still missing

MANILA, Philippines - Tropical storm "Sendong" (international name Washi) is the world's deadliest storm this year, latest data shows.

The storm, which struck Northern Mindanao, the Visayas, and Palawan over the weekend, has now killed at least 927 people, the country's disaster management chief said Monday night. National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Director Benito Ramos also said they have also lost count of the number of people who have gone missing following the flashfloods spawned by the storm.
American meteorologist Dr. Jeff Masters, citing data from insurance broker AON Benfield, said 902 people died during a storm in Brazil in January. Meanwhile, 657 people died during the massive floods in Thailand from June to November.

Masters, who explained how the tragedy may have happened, said Sendong carried an unusual amount of rainwater, which came from a large stream of tropical moisture over the Pacific Ocean. "Aiding the heavy rains were sea surface temperatures that were nearly 1 degree Celcius above average off the east coast of Mindanao, one of the top five warmest values on record," he said in a Weather Underground report.
A US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) report December 15, a day before the storm struck, said Sendong was carrying as much as 50 millimeters of rainwater, which is almost the same amount that storm Ondoy was bringing in 2009.

"Washi hit a portion of the Philippines that does not see tropical storms and typhoons very often. Mindanao is thus hit only about once every twelve years by a significant tropical storm or typhoon," Masters added.
"Since the rains fell on regions where the natural forest had been illegally logged or converted to pineapple plantations, the heavy rains were able to run off quickly on the relatively barren soils and create devastating flash floods. Since the storm hit in the middle of the night, and affected an unprepared population that had no flood warning system in place, the death toll was tragically high," he said.
National government not to blame?

Ramos, meanwhile, told ANC Primetime that the national government should not be blamed for the disaster.
"Hindi naman nagkulang government sa preparasyon. Unang-una, abiso sa kanila [affected communities] signal number 2, Northern Mindanao kasama Central Visayas," he said. "Tama [state weather bureau] PAGASA. They were forewarned. Ang mga kababayan alam ang landslide-prone area at flood-prone area. Nangyari ito sa riverbank," he said.

"We expect to rise because there are casualties in Negros, Sibula, tsaka Zamboangita," Ramos said.
Ramos said people struck by the disaster were not used to heavy rains similar to "Sendong."
"Experience natin dito, hindi kasi ito dating dinadaan ng bagyo itong Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Misamis provinces hanggang Zamboanga del Norte," he said. "Hindi ito dinadaan kay experience nila kung mahagip sila, ma-sidesweep lang, 3 millimeters per hour lang ulan. Eh... Umabot  181mm."
Ramos told ANC's The World Tonight that coffins and cadaver bags in disaster-stricken areas in the south are now running out. He believes that local governments should be responsible for the tragedy.

"With due respect sa mga local na pamahalaan, mukhang may pagkukulang pa rin (sila) sa response," he said.
More bodies being found
More bodies are still being retrieved in Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan, even as coffins and cadaver bags are running out. Cagayan de Oro Mayor Vicente Emano tols ABS-CBN News' Karen Davila on Monday that they have put some dead bodies in an open dumping ground for now. He said the stench from the cadavers "has become unbearable."

Emano said they have just retrieved 17 dead bodies from Jasaan, with at least 40 more bodies still floating in floodwaters. In Iligan City, the large number of dead bodies has overwhelmed morgues and funeral parlors.
Many of the victims remain unidentified.

Over 100 bodies were brought to one funeral home, but because of the overwhelming number of cadavers, some bodies had to be placed beside the building.

The growing number of cadavers in the city has left a foul stench, as well as sought for an immediate need for formalin.

Some evacuation centers have been converted into venues for wakes.

About 47,000 people have also sought shelter in temporary evacuation sites, where food and water are running out.

Hundreds still missing in Iligan

The death toll from "Sendong" may still rise in Iligan because hundreds of people are still missing.

The Philippine National Police is still conducting rescue and retrieval operations to look for survivors.
Chief Supt. Dominador Aquino, police deputy director for eastern Mindanao, said they are not losing hope of finding survivors.

The local government has dug up a mass grave in Pala-o to temporarily dispose of unidentified remains.
Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Cruz said the shallow graves will help victims' relatives to identify bodies.
Forensic experts from the National Bureau of Investigation have arrived in Iligan to help identify the cadavers.

Reblogged from Pinoy Online Chronicles:

Everlito Villacruz, a Filipino OFW based in Kuwait, won the top prize in the Red Bull Art of Can competition and exhibit which opened on December 3 and will run until December 17 at the 360 MALL Exhibition Hall, Kuwait.

Villacruz’s winning work, entitled “Scorpion,” bested 120 other art pieces submitted to the competition, which includef a variety of creations from sculptures to paintings as well as photography and unique handmade mock ups. Of the total entries, 63 made it to the exhibit.
All in all, the competitors used around 20,000 cans of Red Bull energy drink and Red Bull sugar free drink to create their innovative work.

The art of creating masterpieces out of Red Bull cans started in 1999. Exhibitions have been held all around the globe from Europe to New Zealand. In countries like Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Singapore and the USA, artists have been inspired to create artworks made from aluminum.

1984: Apple's famous commercial

Nowadays, everybody seems to be talking about Steve Jobs and Apple..I did a little browsing and I found this video of an ad released by Apple on 22nd January 1984, during the Third Quarter of Super Bowl XVIII. The ad, entitled "1984" is considered as one of the most influential commercials of all time.

This is the full video of '1984', the commercial released by Apple on 22nd January 1984, during the Third Quarter of Super Bowl XVIII.

This was it's only day time release; Other screenings were in the cinema's.

For those confused, it is based on George Orwells book 1984, in which society is controlled by Big Brother and is being watched/heard night and day. On top of this, they are fuelled with hatred for the past and other societies other than their own.

'1984' the commercial is based around one of the Two Minute Hate scenes, in which Apples case, the young woman in red shorts is suggesting Apple Macintosh will give people freedom in computing like never before (IBM was the main competitor at the time). The crowd of emotionless people are the members of the Big Brother society, taking in all the propaganda. The old chap in the large screen is Big Brother. (***All credits to the original uploader for the video and text*** )

Fast forward to 2004, the ad was re-created and released on the occasion of its 20th anniversary but with a little twist...the woman in the video was updated, she was shown listening to an iPod....

Talk about an instant classic..

Apple set to launch iPhone 5 today

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple Inc. is unveiling a new, more powerful version of its wildly popular smartphone — more than a year after it launched the iPhone 4.Last week, Apple Inc. e-mailed invitations to a media event at its headquarters in Cupertino on Tuesday morning. The invite says "let's talk iPhone," implying the secretive company intends to show off the latest version of the device.

The first iPhone came out in 2007, and the phone's signature slick looks, high-resolution screen and intuitive software has gained millions of fans over the years. There were 39 million iPhones sold just between January and the end of June.

Beyond the iPhone itself, the Tuesday event is anticipated as Apple's first major product unveiling in years that won't be led by Steve Jobs, who resigned from the CEO post in August after being out on indefinite medical leave since January. The Apple co-founder is now its executive chairman. And though Jobs did emerge from medical leave twice this year to present Apple's innovations — most recently in June to show off its new mobile software and iCloud content storage service — his successor, Tim Cook, is expected to take the lead this time.

Though not nearly as recognizable as Jobs, Cook, formerly Apple's chief operating officer, has been running Apple since January. For years, he has been in charge of Apple's day-to-day operations, and he has long been seen as the natural successor. He also served as Apple's leader for two months in 2004 while Jobs battled cancer and again for five-and-a-half months in 2009 when Jobs received a liver transplant.

Perhaps more important to Apple fans than who is presenting is what the company will reveal on Tuesday. A new iPhone is expected to have a number of changes, the biggest of which will likely be under the hood: the inclusion of Apple's latest iOS mobile software, iOS 5, which has been slated for release this fall.

IOS 5 will include things such as wireless device setup and content syncing, and beefed-up camera, email and Web-browsing apps. A new service called iMessage will allow iOS 5 users to send text messages to each other over Wi-Fi or wireless carriers' data networks, while a folder called Newsstand will corral newspaper and magazine app subscriptions in one place to make it easier to find them. When it comes out, the software will also be available for Apple's iPad, iPhone 4 and 3GS and the two most recent generations of the iPod Touch.

A new iPhone is also expected to include Apple's forthcoming iCloud service, which will store content such as music, documents, apps and photos on Apple's servers and let you access them wirelessly on numerous devices.

As for hardware, a new iPhone isn't expected to look that much different from the iPhone 4, though it could be thinner and have a bigger screen. The existing iPhone is 0.37 inches thick and has a display measuring 3.5 inches at the diagonal.

An improved rear camera is anticipated, too. The existing iPhone has a 5-megapixel camera on its rear. A number of recently released smartphones have moved to 8-megapixel cameras.

One of the most notable hardware changes many industry watchers are predicting is the inclusion of a more powerful chip: Apple's dual-core A5 processor, which is the same chip it uses in its current iPad. The iPhone 4 runs on Apple's older A4 chip, and the move to a more capable chip should improve things such as multitasking, opening apps and gaming.

Analysts also believe Apple could also use the event to trot out new iPods and updates to its iTunes music software, which it usually does in the fall anyway. Last September, Apple announced updates to iTunes and a line of revamped iPods, which included a version of the iPod Nano with a touch screen.

Jollibee buys Burger King franchise in the Philippines

Source:Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN

Philippine fastfood giant Jollibee Foods Corp. has cemented its leading position in the highly competitive quick-service restaurant industry by taking over the Philippine operations of American chain Burger King.

The deal allows JFC to gain a foothold into the premium segment of the hamburger category in the fast-food business as the group was expecting the premium price segment of the market "to grow appreciably in the years ahead as the Filipino consumers' standard of living rises from the growing economy."

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange Friday, Jollibee announced that it has signed an agreement acquiring a 54-percent stake in BK Titans Inc., owner of PERF Restaurants that, in turn, is the sole franchisee of the Burger King brand in the Philippines. The deal was priced at 65.5 million pesos (US$1.49 million).

Burger King has 23 restaurants in the country, mostly located in Metro Manila. It generates annual revenues of P800 million and has recently turned profitable despite its much smaller store network compared to Jollibee's.

The American fastfood chain, which is based in Miami, Florida, has similar products to Jollibee such as hamburger, fried chicken and fries in its core menu. However, Burger King's products are priced about 30 percent higher than comparable Jollibee products in the Philippines.

The entry into higher-end fast food products will allow Jollibee to harness the growing mass affluence of Filipino consumers and capture a niche market that is less sensitive to economic cycles. At the same time, its entry is seen allowing Burger King to scale up operations in the country.

With the entry of Jollibee into BK Titans, the fast-food giant will still have as minority partners the groups of businessmen Manuel V. Pangilinan (13 percent) and Alberto Lina (33 per cent).

Founded in 1954, Burger King is the second-biggest fastfood hamburger chain in the world operating more than 12,300 locations and serving 11 million guests daily in 78 countries. Most of its restaurants are owned and operated by independent franchisees. In Asia, the business is managed by Singapore-based BK Asiapac Pte. Ltd.

For its part, Jollibee operates the Philippines' biggest fastfood network with 1,941 stores in the country under the brands Jollibee (733), Chowking (395), Greenwich (209), Caffe Ti Amo (2) and Mang Inasal (393). It has 437 stores overseas under the brands Yonghe King (235), Hong Zhuang Yuan (52), Jollibee (71), Red Ribbon (39) and Chowking (40)

Planking: Not just an internet craze but a sign of protest?

What is planking?

Planking is a prank that involves lying face down in a public place, with photos posted on social networking sites.

It was invented by two friends in Somerset who called it the Lying Down Game

But it also emerged later in Australia and was nicknamed planking.

It recently gained national attention in the Philippines when protesters "planked" on the streets as a sign of protest against the rising fuel prices.

The action prompted a congressman to file a bill in the Congress to ban planking, which ultimately became a trending online topic

Since then, planking has been a part of every protest.

The Rise of the Parking Sheds

There's a large open piece of land in front of our building which is being used as a free parking lot for residents/guests of the apartments around it, and even by worshipers at the nearby mosque.

Sometime this year, a parking shed (right, photo below) was constructed by a resident obviously for his own use. A few months later, another shed (left, photo below) followed just a few meters from the first one.

Just a couple of days ago, another resident built his own in between the first two.
Photo taken Sept. 15, 5:50  pm
Photo taken Sept.16, 7:20 am
I won't be surprised if more parking sheds appear soon.

UPDATE: When I came home today from work....voila!..there's goes another one...

Photo taken Sept.17, 5:37 pm
and I haven't even finished writing this blog!........

This practice has been happening not only in my area but also in other parts of Kuwait...people claiming a piece of public land for their own selfish motives as if they paid for it..

Or did they?

I don't think so.

I remember one incident that happened last month. It was past 1 am and most of us were already sleeping when we were awakened by a noise coming from outside. Apparently, the "owner" of the leftmost shed arrived to find another car parked in her "territory". So she (yes, she's a woman) was deliberately blowing her horn (without any regard for her neighbors) continously for almost 30 minutes hoping to alarm the "invader". A patrol car came, probably alerted by one irate neighbor. At about the same time, another lady from the building across came rushing. She was the driver of the other car. After a short discussion and gesturing, the "invader" moved her car, the original "owner" reclaimed her "territory" and the police left the scene, without even bothering why there's a parking structure there in the first place!

Maybe it's not my business but I mean, come on...the last time I checked that lot is a government-owned piece of land and I believe whatever structure built there, even if temporary, is definitely illegal...

Or is there any exemptions to local regulations that I am not aware of?

SEEN: Baklavaji

A Turkish sweets shop in Maidan Hawally
HUMOR: With due respect to the members of the third sex,  "baklava" sounds like the Filipino phrase "bakla ba?" rougly translated "Is he gay?" or "Are you gay?".

FACTS:  Baklavaji is a sweets shop in Maidan Hawally selling popular Turkish sweets particularly the "baklava".

Baklava is a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of phyllo dough, filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with syrup and honey. It is a widely popular dessert in the Middle East, served in every special occasions.

Ji is generally used as a suffix in names and title in the Indian subcontinent.

SEEN: Toot Berry

A newly-opened juice shop in Maidan Hawally

HUMOR:  Somehow, it sounds like "tooth fairy" to me...

HUMOR: The phrase "toot berry" is actually a pleonasm or a redundant term. "Toot" is a Persian-derived term for "berry" or to be specific the "mulberry" fruit, so it's like saying "berry berry".

FACTS: Toot or mulberry is widely used as a tea (toot chai) or juice drink (sharab el toot) in Lebanon and in other parts of the Middle East..

Been There..Ate That (A look back to the month that was July)

In stark contrast with this Holy Month of Ramadan or my diet-with-exercise attempts of the previous months, last month was the most stomach-filling, weight-gaining, calorie-adding month for me and well, for some of my colleagues..and my wife perhaps.

Picture this---lunch and/or dinner feast at least every other day each week for the whole month of July...at the office..at home..everywhere.

From the more popular American fastfood chains like KFC, Popeye's, Hardees, McDo and Domino's Pizza, and the more traditional Arabic food such as lamb Ouzi, kebabs, shish tawook and fatayer to Indian food like Chicken biryani, vegetable samosa and Chicken tikka, to Filipino staple food like Kare-kare, tapsilog, Halo-halo, Pansit Guisado and lomi to the more expensive but real good Chinese food in P.F. Chang's, or the Steak, Fajitas and buffalo wings at Chili's or even some Gourmet food in IKEA...

Been there..ate that!

Not to mention the sweets and desserts..like the oh-so-good ice cream cake from Coldstone, doughnuts and cakes and yes, the latest craze in town, frozen yougurts...but from IKEA (that's why we called it IKEAberry)..believe me, the same FROYO goodness but at a lesser price :)

Been there..ate that!

and I am surprised (or disappointed) to know that I only gained just a little more than 1 kg. from all of these..lols..

Now the new challenge due to the fasting month Ramadan begins.

Azkals lost the game and still won the hearts of Pinoys in Kuwait

Kuwait vs. Philippines, Qadsiya Stadium, July 23, 2011 (Photo by the Author)

Filipino Pride is alive in Kuwait as the much anticipated World Cup qualifying match between Kuwait and the Philippine Azkals was played yesterday (23 July) at the Qadsiya Stadium in Hawally, Kuwait. At least 70% of the capacity crowd were Filipinos--solid fans, plain supporters and curious spectators alike--who were off from work, have probably asked for a leave or simply skipped their duties for the day. They braved the 46-47 degree late afternoon heat, the traffic in the area and the queue and near stampede at the gates just to be in there at least 2 hours before the game.

The seating for the area was arranged so that Filipinos occupy one half of the stadium and Kuwaitis on the other half. But there are still a lot of people waiting outside the gates! Minutes before the game, more people-mostly Pinoys- were allowed in to the Kuwait side until all seats were taken. As it seems, it’s a home game for Filipinos as we filled the stadium..I know we have a large population working in Kuwait but in my years of stay here, I have never seen that huge number of Pinoys all in one place..it was an amazing sight!

The Azkals singing the National Anthem  during the Opening Ceremonies (Photo by the Author)
Inside the stadium, the energy was so high, the anticipation growing as the time draws near..fans were ecstatic even before the players enter the field..mostly wearing their Azkals shirts, some with waving flags, banners and even face paintings to show their support..the feeling reached fever-pitch when one by one, the players hit the grass and started their warm ups..the chants, cheers and screams were so loud I can’t even hear myself!

The same level of energy was sustained at game time until a Kuwaiti striker head home the first goal at the 17th minute of the match and even until the end of first half with Kuwait maintaining its 1-0 lead....we continued to cheer keeping the upbeat mood though everybody's already drenched in sweat..By the second half, everyone can sense the Azkals are already showing signs of exhaustion, due mainly to the sweltering summer heat while the Kuwaiti team is gearing up to deliver the finish. A small scramble at the post resulted to a Kuwait goal at the 67th minute but the crowd almost failed to notice..it even took some time before it appeared in the huge scoreboard..by then, Pinoy fans started feeling restless...It was not so long after when Kuwait delivered its final blow, a solid goal from the middle that left everyone stunned..With so little time left, that should be it for this match..Some fans already sensing defeat, started flocking to the exits but still a good number stayed behind, us included..

The Final Score. Kuwait 3, Azkals 0. (Photo by the Author)
When the game ends, right after the congratulatory handshakes for the winning Kuwaiti team, the Azkals ran next to the stands and acknowledged their countless supporters...it was a gracious exit for the team as they waved and thanked the Kuwait-based Pinoys who came in droves and cheered for them till the end.

Azkals acknowledging the crowd after the match.  (Photo by the Author)
Outside the stadium, while walking towards our parking spot, we passed by some Kuwaiti teenagers playfully taunting us for the score but we proudly showed them our "Go Azkals" placards and continued walking..Another group of Kuwaitis were walking next to us and one of them offered me a packet of Sunflower seeds. I politely said "No, thanks" and instead gestured towards my daughter..He then handed it over to her..I tap the back of the teen and said "Thanks" and "Nice game"..he just smiled back..I think it’s what the game was all about, just a friendly match between two friendly nations..

Though defeated, I know every Pinoy left the stadium happy and proud..The Azkals may have lost the game but they've earned thousands more of supporters and the respect of the Kuwaiti audiences..I can only wish them Good Luck for their second match against Kuwait to be played in the Philippines on July 28...

Go Azkals!

Philippine Azkals in Kuwait

Football fever hits Filipinos in Kuwait as the Philippine Azkals football team arrived in the country for their World Cup qualifying match against the Kuwait National Team . As news spread that the team will be practicing at the open Salmiya Sporting Club at around 7 pm last night, a good number of Pinoy fans trooped to the venue to see the team up close. I was also there together with my family and some friends.

The match will be played at the Mohammad Al Hamad Stadium, Qadsiya Sports Club in Hawally this Saturday, 23 July from 7:00 pm..Tickets, according to press releases, will be available starting today till the day of the match and are priced at KD 2 ( roughly Php 312), KD 3 (roughly Php 468) and KD 5 (roughly Php 780).

Food Trip: OK (Open Kitchen)

Description: Specializes in Filipino and Chinese dishes. Their tapsilog and lomi are my all-time fave. I've known the place for 8 years now and the taste remains the same even though I think the original Pinoy cook is no longer working there, I am not sure. The Pinoy food section used to occupy the smaller store on the left and the bigger place for American and Arabic foods and sandwiches to cater to the taste of local families and other nationalities. But even they are ordering soup and noodles from the Pinoy section.

Location: The place is located at the food court of the amusement center behind McDonalds' at Salem Mubarak street, Salmiya . It's usually packed with families on weekends so the best time to visit is during weekdays and late nights unless you are capable of waiting until a table becomes available.

Recommendation: Tapsilog definitely!

Welcome to the Car Wash

I went to have my car washed at the Oula branch along 4th Ring Road in Salmiya..The service, being automatic, was quick and precise..but that's not what I am writing this blog for....

After the automatic car wash (video posted above), I parked my car outside to have the body wiped dry and the interior vacuum cleaned..one of the cleaners found my wife's silver anklet (which has been missing for some time now) underneath the seats and quickly returned it to me..the truth is, the anklet was not really expensive, but the gesture was commendable, right? ...not to mention the fact that they really did a good job on my car..at a very reasonable price :)

Definitely, I will have my next car wash at the same branch again soon.

Save the Bells ( Kampanya para sa Kampana)

It all started from a casual exchange of conversations in a Facebook group of alumni from the Mount Carmel School of Infanta (MCSI)..

But it quickly gathered momentum and has spread like wildfire...before we knew it, it is now an official campaign project aptly dubbed KAMPANYA PARA SA KAMPANA..a fund-raising campaign for the restoration/replacement of the historic church bells of St. Mark's Cathedral in my hometown of  Infanta, Quezon.

The only remaining bell. Photo courtesy of Shina Mutya-Combalicer
To me and to everyone in Infanta, the bells are part of our every celebration...Almost everyone in town grew up hearing their unique sounds.....slow and solemn during the Angelus, sorrowful during funerals and times of mourning....and of course, who can ever forget their very festive and joyous rings to mark the start of our traditional Simbang Gabi and how they compete with the fireworks at the high point of every Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve mass....It is something we look forward to especially during the Christmas season..they really bring happy thoughts..happy memories..

The sounds were so unique only a handful of individuals is capable of doing it... They all came from a a family of talented musicians, the bell-ringing task being passed from one generation to another thus preserving the unique and distinctive "repeke" the bells are best known for..

That is why it is quite disheartening to know that our beloved Church bells are no longer ringing as they used to..

Old age has already caught up with them..inscriptions on the bells suggest they were made in the late 1800's..but nobody in our town could tell exactly when they arrived and were installed in our cathedral..From the original three bells, only one is left working..the largest (32" dia.) ,though still hanging precariously, had developed a crack while the smallest (about 22" dia.) already fell off from its chain..

Our alumni association together with the Parish Priest and of course, the whole town of Infanta are initiating a campaign to raise funds to help save the bells..Restoration is originally part of the plan but initial investigations and various expert opinions suggest it will be a very delicate and, admittedly, expensive process..the least we can do now is to replace them.

In line with this, we have launched various campaign strategies to help generate funds. I've done my part in creating the advertising posters and t-shirt designs while others are making the rounds and visits to solicit donations. Shina of streetsmartchic.com  has already posted the same call in her blog. ..Still others are giving and sharing their time and talent for the success of this project...

Here is the campaign theme song composed and sung by our homegrown talent, Norman Taniegra. Video courtesy of Kaye Villaflor with photos from various sources.

Video: Mirage in China

The video below shows a beautiful city skyline and mountains as seen in Huangshan City in China at about 5 pm last week, nothing spectacular about that...except that they are not real...

As this eyewitness video claims, the scene is actually a Fata Morgana type of  a "superior mirage"..Mind-boggling as it may sound, it is a naturally occurring optical phenomenon in which the air below the line of sight is colder than that of above, causing sunlight to refract and create reflections of images in the sky..Although mirages seem to be of common occurrence in China, this one is the most impressive because of its details and duration.

Talks about it being a hoax or claims that this is in fact a Project Blue Beam or Hologram experiment are also circulating over the internet..Now whether the video is real or the claims are to be believed is all up to us..but for now, let's just all be amazed by this scene.

What do you think?

Google Kuwait Commemorates Total Lunar Eclipse

Tonight (June 15), a total lunar eclipse is happening as a write this blog.. Sadly, I don't have a telephoto/zoom lens to capture the event..I did took some shots but they were not good enough :(...What makes this eclipse special is the fact that it will lasts for more than 3 and a half hours, from 9:23 pm to about 1:02 am local time..

I took my two daughters outdoors to watch the eclipse during its earlier stages (shortly after 9 pm) but it became too windy and dusty so we had to go back inside..It's unfortunate (yet again) that our flat is located at the other side of the building, where the moon is not visible even from our windows..so no use.

I decided to just go online and here's what I saw first on my monitor..Google Kuwait made this doodle of a lunar eclipse in its various stages..how cool is that!

At least I have something to post about the eclipse..

The Dawning of a New Era in NBA Basketball

Only 7 teams had taken turns in winning the NBA championship in the last 20 years (1990-2010), led by Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls with 6 titles in 6 Finals appearances from 1991-1993 and 1996-1998.

They are followed by the LA Lakers with 5 titles out of 8 trips (the most Finals appearance by any team in the last 20 years). They won their three-peat with Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal and Phil Jackson in 2000,2001 and 2002 and just recently in 2009 and 2010, but without Shaq in the mix.

The San Antonio Spurs and Tim Duncan are next with 4 titles in 4 attempts (1999, 2003, 2005 and 2007).

Hakeem Olajuwon's Houston Rockets won back-to-back titles in 1994 and 1995. But they never flourished as a dynasty like one would expect them to be.

In between the dominance of the above teams, three other teams won the title once.

Underrated Detroit Pistons, composed mostly of role players and  underachievers, won the title in 2004 against an All- Star Lakers team with Shaq, Kobe, Karl Malone and Gary Payton. After the title, the Pistons continued to be a tough playoff matchup to anyone but never reached the Finals again.

Shaq joined the Miami Heat and helped Dwyane Wade win their first ever trip to the Finals in 2006 against another Finals first timer Dallas Mavericks. Since the title, the Heat failed to maintain the momentum, slowed down by various roster shakeups and injuries to their key players.

The Boston Celtics formed a new Big Three in Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett and won their newest match-up with their old rival, the Lakers in 2008. They continued to figure as the team to beat in the East, reaching the Conference Finals against eventual winner Orlando Magic in 2009 and losing their Finals rematch with the Lakers last season.

From the seven champions of the last 20 years, the Rockets and Pistons faded in recent years, suffering an almost similar fate- once powerhouse teams now almost dissolved into oblivion.

Of the remaining five, only the Bulls and the Heat are still in the running in the current NBA playoffs.

In the West, No. 1 seed Spurs lost its first round matchup with no. 8 Memphis Grizzlies while Phil Jackson, Bryant and the Lakers' attempt of another three-peat ended with a loud thud when they were swept by Dirk Nowitski and the Dallas Mavericks in their semi-final series.

With the exit of the Spurs and Lakers, the West paved the way for the emergence of a new breed of heroes in Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant and Memphis' Zach Randolph. Already, their series has the making of a playoff classic, with one game decided in an epic triple overtime. And last night, the Grizzlies beat the Thunders to  force a win-or-go home Game 7 this Sunday. The Mavs are eagerly waiting for the outcome of that series as they also want to claim their right to be considered one of the league's elite.

The East is even more interesting. Over the course of last year's offseason, the most sought after free-agent class of LeBron James, Wade and Chris Bosh joined forces in Miami to form a super-team with a common goal in mind- to get some measure of revenge from the Celtics, win the East and ultimately, win a championship or two, especially for James. They've already accomplished their first goal as they emphatically closed out the Celtics, 4 games to 1, in their second round series. Now, fans and haters alike will wait and see if there will be another championship parade in South Beach in June.

Meanwhile, even with the alignment of stars in Miami, the league saw the resurrection of surprise no. 1 overall, the Chicago Bulls. Led by the youngest league MVP Derrick Rose, the Bulls won their match-up with the stubborn Atlanta Hawks to book their first trip to the Eastern Conference Finals since their glory days with Jordan.

With the departure of legendary teams, we may now be looking into the dawning of a new era in the NBA, where old champions lose and fade away while new and younger teams rise into the spotlight. Gone are the Spurs, the Lakers and the Celtics, the teams that virtually have owned the stage for quite some time..Maybe gone for now, but surely they will be back- maybe younger.

maybe even stronger..

Aside from those teams, we may also be bidding farewell to individuals who have shaped the NBA playoffs picture.

Names like Shaquille O'Neal who's not even in uniform in what maybe the last game of his career.

Phil Jackson, who might have called his last game, sadly in the worst possible way, with the Lakers.

Kobe, Garnett, Duncan, Pierce- they are all in the waning years of their careers. But the call of winning at least one more championship before they hang their jerseys is just too loud to ignore. I give them two, maybe three more seasons and they will be gone too.

Yet, the torch must've been passed already to the new generations. Much like how Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird passed it over to Jordan and company.

Yes, there may still be some familiar faces and names around but slowly, the future is taking shape...the future is now and it becomes as exciting as ever.

Cianna and her Itchy Bitsy Polka Dot Skinny

Our daughter, Cianna, is down with chicken pox, my poor girl. Most probably she got it from school because right now,at least four of her classmates also got infected. Fortunately it was the last 2 weeks of school already and at least she was able to take all her Final Exams..I guess it's the season of the disease here in Kuwait..

Now we're worried about our other daughter, Zoe, she's been exposed already so no use to get her vaccinated...She will surely get it, we just have wait and see when...maybe sooner or later.

Kuwait blogger won Benihana lawsuit

Late January of this year, the blogging universe was stirred when blogger Mark of 248am was sued by Benihana over his negative reviews of the restaurant. Today, he gladly announced that he just won the lawsuit.

Like that day when the lawsuit was announced, the news of the court decision was widely welcomed by everyone. It just simply shows that freedom of speech is alive and is being respected in this country.

Here's to freedom of speech and expression not only in Kuwait, but everywhere.

Holy Week 2011

To my family and friends, here's my prayer for a blessed and meaningful Holy Week for each and everyone of us. May the Good Lord bless us all, now and forever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THE HOLY WEEK
Let us walk the way of the Cross together
And move forward without fear into God’s eternal purposes
May we trust in God alone, then we will never know disgrace

In the midst of grief and despair
May we sense Easter springtime coming
Death’s dark and overwhelming night
Will give way to resurrection light

May we look and listen,
Responding to the Spirit of God who lives within us
May we throw off our grave clothes
And take on the life of the one who raised Christ from the dead

Lord have mercy
When I stand in the shadow of the cross
Christ have mercy
When I kneel with a repentant heart
Lord have mercy
And shine your resurrection light on us

Before the Tower, there was Al Hamra Cinema

I was browsing through my files from my previous office when I chanced upon these photos of the Al Hamra Cinema as it was before. Our office (LAS) used to do a lot of Master Planning studies and proposals for the development of Kuwait City and this area, Al Maqwa Al Shargi, where the cinema used to stand, was part of one of our studies. I don't know much about the history of this cinema, or even Kuwait in general, but I know this cinema was and will always be a part of each and every Kuwaiti families lives.

panorama (rear side)

We took these photos during our survey of the area in 2003. The other photos in the set were taken in the latter part of 2004, I guess for sentimental reasons,  when the building was demolished to give way to the construction of the Al Hamra Tower.

These files had been stored in our hard disks since then, almost forgotten and in danger of being corrupted, deleted and worst, being lost forever.

More photos can be found on my Flickr account.

A little disclaimer though, I don't claim ownership of these photos. They are just uploaded for the sole purpose of sharing a rare glimpse of Kuwait history for the younger generations, citizens and for expats who arrived in Kuwait in the later part of the decade. All credits are due to LAS Architectural Consultancy Office.

Highway Man..FAIL!

I drove down South again today to check out the relocation area for our project site offices. While driving, I was toying with some photo ideas I want to do after my visit. I already had the photo in my mind- me as a highway trekker or something like that..its only a matter of execution and of course, location.

And so, on my way back to Kuwait City, I looked around for good location until I spotted this long stretch of road and decided to stop. I took my camera and tripod and prepared to make the shot. I was already doing some test shots, like 5 or 6 including the photo above, when a huge pick-up truck stopped by and parked in front of my car. A burly middle-aged man alighted from the vehicle and walked towards me. I quickly realized my mistake..I was shooting next to a pipeline!..I was aware of it but somehow I neglected it..stupid me.

At first I thought he is a police officer because of his khaki uniforms..Then he introduced himself, in good English, as the security officer for the area...He asked me in a polite manner what I was doing there and I explained to him I just came from our site and thought it was nice to have some souvenir pictures of myself in that area...He asked if I was not aware it is prohibited to approach or even take photographs there..He also asked if he can see the pictures I took so I let him.. He saw two photos of me sitting on the guard rails with the pipelines behind me and told me to delete them..I apologized and deleted the two photos with him looking while telling me not to do the same mistake again..of course I said yes..When everything was clear, we shook hands and drove our separate ways..

I could only shake my head and laugh for doing such stupidity...FAIL!

Desert Adventure + Funshoot Weekend

Last Friday, the LightBenders Photography Group drove down South for 2 important events: first is our induction as official members of the group (yey!) and second, as birthday treat of our resident designer/HMUA, Kenneth.I brought my family with me to experience the outdoors and to meet the rest of the LB families.

First stop was this beautiful rock formations at the outskirts of Khiran, some 90 kms. south of Kuwait. There in the looming shadows of the rocks above,we conducted our oath-taking as the first batch accepted by the group in their young existence..

Just to be in the same company as these talented and creative individuals is already a rewarding experience by itself and to be formally inducted as one of them is just the icing on the cake..

Next stop is at this camel farm in Wafra where we spent the rest of the day. There, in the middle of the desert, we had our barbecue/lunch, the children played around, and we simply had a good time, taking photos of the camels and their caretakers, and later on, an impromptu photoshoot with our guests turned models.

It was a fun and exciting day, a great outdoor experience indeed....I can't wait for more fun and creative shoots with the whole LB team...soon!
